What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve, usually caused by increased intraocular pressure. It is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide, but with early detection and proper treatment, vision loss can be prevented.
At Opticorp, with locations in Suba-Bogotá and the Sabana de Bogotá (Sabana - Chía, Cajicá), our team of glaucoma specialists offers early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment with over 25 years of experience.
Important: Glaucoma often has no symptoms in its early stages. That is why regular eye exams are essential, especially after 40 or if you have risk factors.
Types of Glaucoma
Open-Angle Glaucoma
The most common type. It develops slowly and usually has no symptoms until vision is significantly affected. Treatment: Usually controlled with eye drops, though laser or surgery may be needed in some cases.
Angle-Closure Glaucoma
Less common but more serious. Occurs when the drainage angle is suddenly blocked, causing a rapid rise in pressure. Treatment: Requires immediate medical attention. May be treated with medication, laser or emergency surgery.
Glaucoma Diagnosis
At Opticorp we perform a complete evaluation that includes:
Intraocular Pressure Measurement
Tonometry to measure pressure inside the eye, one of the main risk factors for glaucoma.
Optic Nerve Exam
Fundus evaluation to detect damage to the optic nerve.
Visual Field
Test to evaluate peripheral vision and detect visual field loss characteristic of glaucoma.
Frequently Asked Questions about Glaucoma
Risk factors include: age over 40, family history of glaucoma, elevated intraocular pressure, diabetes, severe myopia or hyperopia, and prolonged steroid use. People of African or Hispanic descent also have higher risk.
Glaucoma cannot be fully cured, but it can be effectively controlled. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, vision loss can be prevented. Treatment must be continuous and requires regular follow-up.
A complete exam every 1-2 years after 40 is recommended, or every 6-12 months if you have risk factors. If you already have glaucoma, follow-up will be more frequent as determined by your ophthalmologist.
